Biography

 

 

Laurent Montaron (b. 1972, lives and works in Paris) is an artist whose practice spans a wide field and relies on various media: sculpture, objects, moving images, photography, sound production, and music. His works draw inspiration from the recent history of technology. His practice seeks to question the transformations that have shaped our ways of being with the advent of new techniques. Through a critical analysis of the tools that shape our representations, these works highlight certain paradoxes inherent in our consciousness of modernity. They underline how innovations have continually influenced the ways we observe and understand the world. The preeminence of sight in contemporary culture has shifted history toward a media era, revealing the fragility of human memory. The recording of image and sound has replaced oral and written narration in transmitting past experiences. In a time when our beliefs are more than ever anchored in the narratives with which we identify, and when—following in the wake of social networks and the attention economy—multiple narratives coexist, sometimes even replacing facts themselves, these works invite us to question what makes a shared experience of the world possible within this new regime of truth.

Laurent Montaron (né en 1972, vit et travaille à Paris) est un artiste dont la pratique couvre un large champ et repose sur divers médiums : sculpture, objets, images en mouvement, photographie, production sonore et musique. Ces œuvres s’inspirent de l’histoire récente des technologies. Ses travaux cherchent à interroger les transformations qui ont façonné nos manières d'être avec l’avènement des techniques. À travers une analyse critique des outils qui modèlent nos représentations, ces œuvres mettent en lumière certains paradoxes inhérents à notre conscience de la modernité. Elles soulignent la manière dont les innovations ont continuellement influencé nos façons d’observer et de comprendre le monde. La prééminence du regard dans la culture contemporaine a déplacé l’histoire vers une ère des médias, mettant en évidence la précarité de la mémoire humaine. L’enregistrement de l’image et du son s’est substitué à la forme du récit oral et écrit dans la transmission des expériences passées. À une époque où nos croyances s’arriment plus que jamais aux récits auxquels nous nous identifions, et où — dans le sillage des réseaux sociaux et de l’économie de l’attention — de multiples narrations coexistent, parfois jusqu’à remplacer les faits eux-mêmes, ces œuvres nous invitent à questionner ce qui rend possible une expérience partagée du monde au sein de ce nouveau régime de vérité.
